BS Indrakala - Former Karnataka High Court Judge and Legal Expert

Justice BS Indrakala is a former judge of the high court of Karnataka with a career spanning over four decades in the Indian judiciary. She holds a bachelor of science from Maharani College, University of Mysore, and a bachelor of laws from Sharada Vilas Law College, of the same university. BS Indrakala began her legal practice under the guidance of senior advocate T. V. Krishna Rao, where she gained expertise in civil, criminal, and labour law cases. She later served as a government pleader and legal counsel for various state entities.

In 1993, Justice Shamachar Indrakala was appointed as a district and sessions judge, becoming the second woman in Karnataka’s judiciary to hold the role. Over the years, she worked across various courts, including as principal judge of the family courts in Karnataka and chief judge of the court of small causes in Bangalore. She also participated in the Indo-British judicial sensitisation programme at the University of Warwick and contributed to workshops on gender laws and judicial case management. She was appointed an additional judge of the high court of Karnataka in 2012 and became a permanent judge in 2013, serving until 2014.

After her tenure at the high court, Justice Indrakala served as president of the state consumer dispute redressal commission, where she addressed consumer grievances until stepping down in 2019. She currently pursues interests such as knitting and painting while remaining connected to the legal community.
